WIP #007: VanillaTV – Byte me

Posted by on August 2, 2011 | One comment

VanillaTV stands as proof that a lot can happen in 3 weeks. The eSport community is pumped so full of dedicated and inspired people it can seem that they’ve each crammed 50+ hours into every day. Since our last conversation, Byte (lead vtv developer) and his team have been working hard to realise the dream of a single location for all the TF2 comp matches to be seen.

While it takes a huge cast to get this show running, Byte sees his crew as filling four core group roles, with a special fifth catagory for Torden alone.

Floormanager – looks after casters/web posts/on the day, ensuring everything happens where it should (leftism). Directors (or Streamers) – the cameramen who present the feed for each show. Casters – a strict policy of quality is maintained on main casters and co-casters. News/Article posters – able to pump out the bulk of the site news and written posts (Atrox, Trell, Torden, Shox). Designers – a role for Torden.

They have been able to stamp their brand on the feeds through use of a customised HUD and bring to life some nifty site features such as the VOD archive and the Streaming plugin.

New public servers are their gift back to the comp world. A place for players from around the world to hang out and practise their DM skills.

WIP #006: PubComp – A call for replays

Posted by on July 19, 2011 | One comment

The long-awaited “new” PubComp site is up. I catch up with Parable about the changes the site has seen already in their first couple of weeks. Steam’s Open ID is being utilised to allow participants to engauge in the entire system with just one login and Phife has brought his own style to the artwork.

There’s a casting call for players to donate their replays. Crowd sourcing to get real experiences for each of the required clips.

The coding is being left open to allow for a multitude of changes to be made to the core design. A forward looking attitude that has payed off already since the potential is there for players to create their own game modes and have servers respond to those conditions without having to recode everything from scratch.

Finally, Parable looks to the future; at an entire prebuilt development package for new coders to get up and running without having to start from scratch each time.

WIP #005: VanillaTV – literally the most alien thing

Posted by on July 8, 2011 | No comments

In this our first show with Torden of we take it nice and slow. Torden shares the stories of how he came to Team Fortress 2 and how, in turn, VanillaTF2 started. Given the respectability of the site in covering competative TF2, it seemed almost inevitable that VanillaTF2 would want to start their own shoutcasting site. Rather than starting from scratch Torden looked to to provide this solution. The two sites merged and VanillaTV was born.

The merged sites required a rehash of the VanillaTF2 site. Running on WordPress, a number of features have been added and customised to allow news and scores to be linked directly to shoutcasted events. It’s not just the site that’s seen a rethink. OWN3D has been dropped in favour of JustinTV’s new games broadcasting group, TwitchTV.

There are more projects that Torden thinks VanillaTV could be associated with. He chats about a few that are on the radar at the moment and hints and what could be in store for the future.

WIP #004: GangGarrison2 Quadcopters and Super Cock Blockers

Posted by on June 30, 2011 | No comments

The guys from GangGarrison2 are here. Well, two of them at least. Their project size ebs and flows seemingly with the moon. Luckily the two who turned up for this, their first episode of WIP, know all there is to know about gg2.  Med0 (Simeon Maxein) and mrfredman (Sam Goldberg) have worked on this for a very long time.  The Project started as a demake of TF2 for a TIGsource competition. Inevitably this Game Maker program has been accused of aquiring many of its concepts from Cave Story and Soldat. Aware of this every opportunity is made to reference the games where possible.

Just in case you were thinking these guys were a one trick pony, mrfredman reveals he had a hand in Super Cock Blockers and Med0 gets his kicks programing skynet’s flying droids.
